Gary McKitterick Gillett from Nambour General Hospital has successfully led another trek to Mt Everest Base Camp, raising vital funds and awareness for Parkinson’s Disease through Shake It Up Australia.

This year, a dedicated group of 13 Australians and Kiwis braved the journey, reaching an altitude of 5,346 meters.

“Climbing to Everest Base Camp is no small feat,” said Gary. “Dealing with high altitudes makes even basic tasks challenging, offering a glimpse into the struggles faced by those living with Parkinson’s Disease. Experiencing mental fog, sleep disturbances, and cognitive impairment firsthand underscores the urgency of our cause.”

The trek, which Gary has now completed six times, was a resounding success, with all participants making it to the base of the world’s highest mountain. “Standing at the foot of Everest, knowing we accomplished this together, was an incredible achievement,” he said.

Gary is already planning his next adventure: a trek around the Annapurna Circuit in 2025. This journey will take him and his team over the Thorang La Pass at 5,416 meters, in another effort to raise funds for Parkinson’s research.

“The hills get higher, the challenge greater, but the cause is worth it,” Gillett said.

Gary encouraged everyone to keep in mind the Step out for Parkinsons 2024 on Sunday June 30 at USC. “It’s a walk to help slow, stop and find a cure for PD,” he said.
