Celebrating 30 Years of The Whistle Stop at Secrets on the Lake

Nestled within the enchanting landscape of Montville’s Secrets on the Lake lies The Whistle Stop, a beloved accommodation cabin with a rich history. Owned and operated by George and Aldy Johnston, Secrets on the Lake has been a cherished family business for three decades, with The Whistle Stop playing a central role since its inception in 1994.

Reflecting on their journey, Aldy said: "All of our treehouses and cabins are special to us, but The Whistle Stop holds a unique place in our hearts. It was our first cabin, and it continues to evoke fond memories and capture the hearts of our guests."

Originally built in 1910 as the Beerburrum Railway Station, The Whistle Stop enjoyed 83 years of service before George and Aldy acquired it in 1993. After securing the building, they enlisted the help of Eddie Wright, known for trading in old Queenslanders, to transport it to its current rainforest site.

"It was quite the adventure, with twists and turns as we navigated the delicate task of placing it on the new stumps. Despite some challenges, we finally succeeded, albeit with a few gray hairs added to George's collection,”said Aldy.

George's background in reclaiming old materials from his brother's reclamation business played a significant role in the cabin's restoration. "We broke down old railway buildings and stockpiled them while the pine flooring was sold to make the colonial pine furniture that was popular in the nineties. The materials were used to build the Lake house and to renovate and extend The Whistle Stop," Aldy said.

As The Whistle Stop marks its 30th year in its second life, it continues to enchant visitors with its timeless allure and historical significance. Secrets on the Lake invites guests to experience the magic of this charming cabin nestled amidst the beauty of the Sunshine Coast hinterland.
