Governance and accountability under the spotlight at November Moving Forward event

Moving Forward Sunshine Coast is holding an event on Saturday, November 2 featuring two eminent speakers, Dr Scott Prasser and Dr Wayne Graham. This is an invaluable opportunity to deepen understanding of significant issues in governance and public accountability in Australia.

Dr Scott Prasser has worked in federal and state governments in senior advisory positions and served in academic roles across five universities, the last at professorial level.

Dr Prasser will present a detailed examination of Royal Commissions in Australia. He will discuss their historical context, the various successes and failures, and the ongoing debate surrounding their necessity. Most importantly, Dr Prasser will address the critical question of why Australia needed a Royal Commission into COVID-19, yet one was never initiated.

His insights will provide a nuanced understanding of the political and social factors that influence these inquiries, giving a clearer picture of their role in shaping public trust and policy.

Dr Wayne Graham is a Senior Lecturer in Management in the School of Business and Creative Industries at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Dr Graham will discuss the often overlooked issue of White Elephant Projects.

Through a series of case studies, he will explore the definition and implications of these projects and initiatives that consume vast public resources without delivering corresponding benefits.

Dr Graham will analyse why these projects emerge, the challenges they pose to fiscal responsibility, and the critical need for accountability in public spending. His presentation aims to provoke thought on how society can curb such inefficiencies and ensure that public funds are utilized effectively.

This event will be held at the North Shore Community Center, 701 David Low way, Mudjimba. Doors open at 1.30pm for a 2pm start.
