Mayoral candidate has say on Pony Club ‘farce’
What a terrible situation it is when you have a strong, community-based group like the Yandina Pony Club being given the run-around by council for years. President Kate Pilcher and I have been talking about this over two months and I’m gobsmacked by what this club has had to endure. Surely, this is a sign that council really does need to go back to basics and focus on serving its community? Asking a club, which focuses on outdoor activities for children, to pay thousands of dollars in permit fees to be able to use land really isn’t right. We should all be angry about this level of bureaucracy gone mad. It would be funny if it wasn’t so serious.

Nambour Rotary Christmas Raffle 2023
We were the winners of first prize in the Nambour Rotary Christmas Raffle and we cannot express how thrilled we were in winning. We especially would like to thank Nambour Rotary for the hard work involved getting this Raffle together and the amazing business community who donated.

Railway bridge roadworks don’t make sense
The new road works where Jubilee Drive joins the Palmwoods Woombye Road by the railway bridge is simply incompetent road planning. All locals know how difficult it is at most times to go from Jubilee Drive onwards into Palmwoods but those turning left had access to a left turn whilst those going ahead sat in the long queues.
Now with the new road works the road has been narrowed to one lane at this point with no ability for a left turn under the railway bridge unless you sit in the traffic queue!
How on earth was this allowed to happen?
It is poor design and simply zero knowledge of local traffic conditions.
The stupid bollard preventing a left turn lane needs to be removed immediately to enable traffic to form a left turn lane.
It looks as though the bollard preventing the left turn is for a pedestrian refuge. In all my decades of using this intersection I have yet to see even one pedestrian at this point. Yet I see long queues of vehicles.
Locals simply cannot believe Council can be so ignorant of local traffic flows and how this situation was allowed to happen. Can you please organise for the left-hand lane to be re-instated? – Ken Coulter, Ilkley
The spirit of Christmas & the kindness of a stranger
A few days before Christmas I was about to redeem my $20 flybuys voucher at the checkout of Coles in Nambour which I had activated a week before.
As much as I myself and the sales assistant tried after having put my correct pin number in, the relatively new card wouldn’t work. To my utter embarrassment the queue behind me at the check-out counter became longer and longer. I apologised profusely to all those patient people, mentioning to them that I had been counting on the $20 to add to my grocery shopping as I was only getting my pension on a Monday and it was Friday.
The gentleman behind me had observed the situation silently all the time. He suddenly handed a $50 note to the young man behind the counter, asking him to put $20 towards my grocery and give him the rest of the money back.
An emotional reaction of incomprehension, joy and utter gratitude took over my whole being. The gentleman did not want me to give him my details and return to him the $20 the following Monday.
This heart-warming true story proves once again that there are many Earth Angels walking amongst us who come to our help when we need a compassionate heart most.
