Local lifesaver reaches 600 blood and plasma donations
Local lifegiver Rod Rachow did his community proud as he reached a remarkable milestone of 600 blood and plasma donations, saving up to 1800 lives as a result.
The remarkable feat was achieved at Lifeblood’s Nambour Donor Centre on Wednesday 19th March.
Rod began donating 32 years ago when his wife Leigh suffered a huge post-partum haemorrhage during the birth of their son Matthew and required blood transfusions that saved her life.
Fittingly, wife Leigh and son Matthew were both by his side as he reached the recent milestone.
Lifeblood hopes Rod’s selfless actions will inspire others in the community to follow in their footsteps and lay down their arm to donate blood and plasma.
Lifeblood spokesperson Rebecca Ind said Rod’s donations had gone to people of all ages and from all walks of life who rely on blood and plasma.
“The main users of blood and blood products include people undergoing cancer treatment, women giving birth, trauma victims and people with blood disorders and immune conditions,” Rebecca said.
“Rod has helped to save lives and improve the quality of life for so many through his ongoing generosity.
“On the Sunshine Coast, we need an extra 800 donors across the next month to fill appointments at our Nambour and Maroochydore Donor Centres. If you’ve never donated before, this is a great time to give it a go.
“This year, we need 100,000 new donors around the country to keep up with the increasing hospital demand for blood and plasma.
“An hour of your time might give someone the rest of their life. You never know whose life you might be saving.”
